I never saw myself as a “gun person.”
Like most moms, my daily life revolved around my kids—school drop-offs, grocery runs, playdates, and a never-ending to-do list. My job was to nurture and protect them, but deep down, I worried: What if something happened, and I wasn’t prepared?
One night, that fear became real.
A Moment That Changed Everything
I was pushing the cart with my groceries to the car with my two-year-old in the cart and my five-year-old holding onto my hand when I noticed a man lingering a few rows away. Something about him set off alarm bells, maybe the way he kept looking around, maybe how he changed direction when I did.
I felt my heart race. My hands gripped the cart a little tighter. What do I do?
I hurried to buckle my toddler into his car seat while keeping an eye on the man. He took a step closer.
Then, out of nowhere, another car pulled into the space next to me. The man turned and walked the other way. Maybe he was harmless, maybe he wasn’t, but in that moment, I realized something terrifying: I had no plan.
That night, I made a decision.
Taking Control
I signed up for a concealed carry class the next day.
Walking in, I felt out of place—most of the students were men, and I was just a mom who wanted to feel safe. But within minutes, I realized I wasn’t alone. Another woman in the class was a single mother worried about being followed to her car after work. Another was a grandmother who traveled alone. We all had the same reason for being there: We wanted to be ready.
The class changed everything. It wasn’t just about shooting, it was about situational awareness, de-escalation, and understanding when and how to act. It taught me how to carry comfortably, how to draw safely, and most importantly, how to have the mindset of a protector.
By the end of the course, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time: confidence.
Prepared, Not Paranoid
Carrying a firearm didn’t make me reckless—it made me aware. I wasn’t afraid to go out alone with my kids anymore. I knew how to spot trouble before it got too close. I knew how to position myself to keep my children safe. And I knew, if the worst ever happened, I had the ability to fight back.
I hope I never have to. But I’d rather be a mother prepared to protect her children than just hoping a bad situation never finds us.
If you’ve ever felt that fear, that helpless moment where you wished you had a plan, I urge you to take the first step. A concealed carry class isn’t just about carrying a gun; it’s about carrying the confidence to protect what matters most.
Because as moms, we’ll do anything to keep our children safe. Shouldn’t we be ready for anything?
